UNODC supports the Government of Lao PDR for the development of the first Comprehensive Drug Control Master Plan (2009-2013)

UNOC through the Global Partnership on Alternative Development Project provides technical and financial support to the Government of Lao PDR for the development of a comprehensive National Drug Control Master Plan (2009-2013). The Master Plan will serve as a policy frame work for drug control and prevention in the country and also helps integrate drug control objectives into relevant national and international agencies. The Master Plan was drafted in consultation with relevant government counterparts and a national workshop was organized in September 2008 to involve policy makers, planners, experts and practitioners from concerned agencies to discuss and recommend the future directions, strategies and plans. The master plan includes 9 main components: t rend analysis and risk assessment, alternative development, drug demand reduction, civic awareness, law enforcement, criminal justice, chemical precursor control and forensics capacity, international and regional cooperation and institutional capacity building. The draft Master Plan is being reviewed by the relevant ministries and is expected to be approved by the Government by the end of this year.
